Sometimes I cannot blame the children for taking the meaning literally! It is indeed difficult for them to understand the hidden meaning / agenda in the Chinese characters. The children make sense of the language by how they understand of each character. Just like the 2 words "难过", in Chinese it means "sad" but children, being innocent and simple, Pb take it as "difficult to cross (the road)". In a way, she's right coz how on earth would she know the figurative meaning in these 2 put-together characters?
This was what had happened when I was revising Unit 12-14 of the 3B text book in preparation of a Chinese checkpoint with her. I'm not angry with her, just finding it amusing! :) Have a good laugh! :)
Me : What is 伤心?
Pb: Heart injured??
Me : Huh??!!! Then what is 伤口?
Pb : Mouth injured??
Me : *face-palm* 😱
