English Reader

Phoebe's school got the children Rigby's Rocket readers. I went to EdVenture to take a look. They sell by a whole set of but it was rather expensive, about $250+ if I didn't remember wrongly. And they sell by the set but Phoebe already has some of the titles within the set. There will be many duplicates if we're to buy the set. Hence, in the end, we got her the JOY readers instead. EdVenture was having 50% sale for the Joy readers. Hence, it's $100 for 50 titles. Not bad a deal. Phoebe already has 3 titles of the Joy readers. I received them in the goodie bags of a school seminar which I've attended last year. Last Saturday when we were in EdVenture, I read some of the other JOY readers to Phoebe and she loves them and she said, "Mommy, I like these books."

So we decided to buy them :) All for our little girl!

Here's Phoebe, reading one of her school readers to you. You can see that she recognises some of the words but she also memorised the story. That's why she said "small" instead of "little" in one of the pages. But it's fine with me because I know that memorising is also part of the journey to word recognition and literacy development :) Enjoy the story.

haaa...talking about memorizing ...it's a good to recall what we learn through memory....and I guess that's the difference in language development and language acquistion. To me, I am more worried about Ethan's concept in everything he learns especially in his language acquisition. So whenever he based on his memory, I am worried cos' not sure if he really mastered the concept. So each time he based on his memory, I need to reinforce his learning. If Ethan based on his memory to show me what he learned, he is still basing on his perception patterns, and it's telling me that the concept is not formed and not learned. I guess I am very strict with him mastering his concept instead of forming the wrong perception patterns. That's why I always assess Ethan every time he learns anything new. Assessment will tell me if he really master the concept or through memory. I am very worried he based on memory, guess this is our difference in our school of thought bah. Again, it's personal and indivdual belief, as long as the children learn eventually, it doesn't really matter bah.

Haha. Cherish, you very chim lah. Don't stress youself up :) Just let them learn naturally, expose them to as much learning opportunities as possible and let them play alot! They'll learn in their own ways and in their own time :) But I'm very impressioned with your way of teachin Ethan! And the best thing is that, you seize the opportunity to create a learning environment for him, based on his interest! In that way, Ethan will enjoy learning and not feel coerced. Clap clap clap for your effort and observance!! :)

I met Andy, but I didn't have a chance to talk to him coz he was entertaining some other clients. I spoke to Alice instead. I got and brochure from her and passed it to my school's library coordinator. Maybe the school can purchase some of the readers for the P1 kids, I think the LSP kids need these readers especially! Then I can also borrow for my girl to read :) heehee

yoooo...Annie, don't know leh...maybe occupational hazzard bah ....I guess as teachers, we always want the best out of our students, and what's more our own children, right? I let him play, but surprisingly, he always points to letters, numbers and don't want to play you know...sometimes, play with his toys for a while (less than 1 min) he will sit at his learning station and work on his alphabets...really scary leh, I thot children love to play??? even when he plays, he loves to play with the alphabets and numbers cards and the wooden puzzles ....I checked on myself if I am forcing him to learn at this young age...but no leh..he automatically shows interest, and I just grabbed the opportunity to teach ...I hope when he go to school, I hope he won't feel bored since he is learning all these now ...hiaz...

I supposed learning numbers and alphabet is his way of playing and having fun, esp when he is able to draw response from you when he play with numbers and letters :)
